Formula E in Urban Montreal?

Since its debut on the Evergrande Beijing Circuit, Formula E has grown in popularity among viewers. Even though the cars are producing a low noise soundtrack compared to their petrol based cousins, we can still feel the excitement among the crowd thanks to a small city circuit. Indeed the Formula E championship does not race on classic Formula 1 circuits. Every destination part of the race calendar is an “Urban Center”. The thrilling news is that Montreal has high chances of closing a deal with the FIA to host one of the races on the 2017 calendar.

This is part of Montreal’s mayor Denis Coderre plan to bring more international events to our great city. He met with the FIA leadership during the 2014 Montreal Grand Prix to show his interest in hosting an all-electric Formula E championship. Both parties showed great enthusiasm in bringing this event to a city where racing is extremely present and part of the culture. This race is remarkably important according to our mayor who wants to put Montreal back on the map of technologically advanced cities and showcase the possibilities of electrifying public transports.

As for the car’s themselves, the chassis are manufactured by Spark Racing and powered by a McLaren P1 electric motor. The motor is linked to a five speed gearbox which gives an impressive top speed compared to regular electric cars. Every driver on the championship has the same car that lets them showcase their true driving skills. During a regular race each driver has two cars due to limited battery capacities. This gives the viewers an unusual and quite funny show of driver jumping around to get from one car to the other.

Hosting this championship requires a city to modernise its infrastructure which ultimately will bring back life and help flourish the great city of Montreal. Being ourselves fan of racing, the entire Yclass Team can’t wait to attend the 2017 Montreal Formula E Grand Prix.
